报告简介

Carotenoids are bound to both peripheral light-harvesting (LH) 2 and LH1‘core’pigment-protein complexes in purple photosynthetic bacteria. In these complexes carotenoids serve as additional light harvesting pigments that capture the energy in the blue-green spectral region of the solar spectrum and transfer this energy to bacteriochlorophylls. Singlet-singlet excitation energy-transfer (EET) is involved in this process. The efficiency of EET from carotenoid to bacteriochlorophyll in the LH complexes depends on the number of conjugated C=C double bonds (n) present within the carotenoid. In purple bacterial light-harvesting systems the efficiency of excitation energy-transfer from carotenoid to bacteriochlorophyll depends on the extent of conjugation of the carotenoids. However, this feature is able to be modified by incorporating carbonyl containing carotenoids into the light-harvesting system from purple photosynthetic bacteria. In this talk, I would like to discuss how natural photosynthetic antennas optimize the energy flow from carotenoid to chlorophyll. This discussion is further extended to highlight strategies to enhance the efficiency of energy-transfer from carotenoid to chlorophyll in artificial photosynthetic antennas.
